STATEMENT: Congressmen John Durate and Ken Calvert Just Picked Extremism Over Californians

CALIFORNIA - Today, Congressmen John Duarte and Ken Calvert sided with the far right and cast their votes for Representative Jim Jordan to become the next Speaker of the House. Jim Jordan, a notable extremist and founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, has a dismal record of legislative success and a history of votes that would position him as a speaker for corporations and the rich, not for hardworking Americans.

Valley Families Unite coalition member and Courage California Executive Director Irene Kao issued the following statement:

“We are seeing in real time that our Representatives are choosing to side with an extremist instead of doing what is best for their constituents here in California. Like Ken Calvert, Jim Jordan voted for the Trump tax cuts, which encouraged companies to ship jobs overseas and drove up the national deficit at the expense of American workers. On multiple occasions, he voted to cut hard-working Americans' benefits, such as Social Security and health care. The true colors of these congressmen are becoming increasingly apparent, and we are disappointed by their decision.”
