STATEMENT: Valley Family Unite Responds to The House Passing Spending Budget Despite House Republicans’ Determination to Make Extreme Cuts
Sacramento, California — Valley Families Unite has issued the following statement in response to the successful passage of government appropriations bills in the House of Representatives, setting the stage to avert a potential government shutdown and ensuring vital resources for working families in California and across the nation.
"After six months of negotiations, despite Republicans' attempts to shut down the government and cut crucial programs and services, Democrats championed working families and helped avert a government shutdown," stated Irene Kao, Executive Director of Courage California. "The passage of the budget has prevented needless disruption to essential services and programs for families across California."
We celebrate the leadership of congressional Democrats in including a $1 billion increase for child care and Head Start, a $120 million increase in funding for cancer research at the National Institutes of Health, and the preservation and strengthening of education through a $20 million increase in Title I funding, safeguarding more than 20 K-12 and higher education programs.
While we acknowledge the collective efforts that averted a shutdown, Congressmen Ken Calvert and John Duarte made continuous efforts to make cuts to housing, WIC, Medicaid, and so many other programs that working Californians rely on. Despite their efforts, millions of working Californians can now take a sigh of relief knowing their programs are now fully funded and are safe.”
