Palm Springs Residents Hold Discussion on the State of Healthcare for LGBTQ+ Families
Commemorating Pride Month and Highlighting Rep. Calvert’s Harmful Record on LGBTQ+ Healthcare Costs
Palm Springs, California – Valley Families Unite held a compelling and informative community forum titled "Pride, Politics, and Progress" at the Kaiser Grille Palm Springs. The event brought together concerned citizens, activists, and community groups to discuss critical issues surrounding funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, with a particular focus on Palm Springs Congressman Ken Calvert’s votes on federal legislation that would have impacted healthcare costs for LGBTQ+ people.
During the forum, attendees examined Congressman Ken Calvert’s votes to cut access to affordable healthcare, particularly for individuals with pre-existing conditions. VFU speakers highlighted how these decisions have potentially led to higher costs and reduced care for vulnerable populations. The discussion also delved into the implications of the Republican Study Committee's budget plan, which also poses a significant threat to healthcare protections and could increase costs for LGBTQ+ families, including increased costs for prescription medication.
The event featured a free food reception, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for community members to engage in meaningful dialogue. Participants discussed alternative approaches to healthcare that could better support the community’s health, emphasizing the importance of funding for comprehensive care.
David Weiner, a local activist and forum participant, shared his perspective: "This event was a crucial platform for us to voice our concerns and find solidarity in our fight for better healthcare. The discussions we had tonight shed light on the urgent need for policies that truly protect our community, especially those most vulnerable and individuals living with HIV. Congressman Calvert must represent the interests of ALL constituents."
Valley Families Unite is committed to advocating for quality, affordable healthcare policies that protect and support all individuals, regardless of their background or health status. We urge Rep. Calvert to support access to quality, affordable healthcare for LGBTQ+ families and individuals living with HIV.
